Product Questions
-
Can I put this product on a previously stained log home? The stain now is an oil based product.
Thank you for your question about Cetol SRD Semi-Transparent. I'm afraid it's probably not a good fit in this case. Water-based coatings such as this have a tendency to not adhere well on top of oil-based coatings. PPG's official guidance for using Cetol SRD Semi-Transparent on a previously stained wood surface is to completely remove the previous coating before application of this stain.
If you're considering moving from a translucent coating (one where you can see the wood grain clearly through the coating) to a semi-transparent coating (one where the wood grain is more obscured by the coating), you might want to consider an oil-based semi-transparent wood stain. It will be worthwhile in that case to know which stain is on the wall now and to confirm that the new finish is compatible over the old finish.
It's also worth considering that homeowners are generally financially better off to stay with a stain that's still holding up reasonably well instead of stripping it off to start with a new one. Please don't hesitate to call or email us if you have any questions or would like to discuss your case in more detail!
